TECHNOGYM AND THE WELLNESS OPPORTUNITY
In the early nineties, when an all-muscle vision of fitness à la Jane Fonda and Sylvester Stallone was taking America by storm, in Italy, Technogym launched a totally new vision. They called it “Wellness”, a profoundly Italian way of living, dating back to the “mens sana in corpore sano” (a healthy mind in a healthy body) principle of Ancient Rome based on regular physical exercise, a healthy diet and a positive mental approach. By transforming a business based on hedonism into a social business, Technogym has created a revolution that has moved the focus of fitness from looking good to feeling good, and from a small élite of body beautiful fanatics to the entire human population.
Nerio Alessandri, President and Founder of Technogym has created not just a company but an entirely new philosophy: Wellness.
“Wellness is a social opportunity for everyone. An opportunity for governments to reduce health service costs, for companies to stimulate their members to be more creative and productive and for all citizens to improve their health and daily lifestyle.” This is the proposal that Alessandri has launched at a moment when for the first time in the history of our planet the number of people who are overweight has exceeded the number of people who are undernourished.
In the current macroeconomic scenario, the most successful sectors seem to be those that succeed in providing offers and solutions that are useful to society. This is the basis of the social business concept, a new business model that focuses its product offer on people’s fundamental needs. That’s why the fitness, wellness and health sectors play an incredible economic and social role by investing in innovation, by creating a wellness and health culture and by giving a crucial contribution in educating young generations.
