University of West London powered by Technogym unveils new digital-led gym facility
A market-leading facility that increases physical activity provision for students, staff, local residents and supports academic outcomes.
Upgrading the student wellbeing experience
University of West London Students' Union expanded and refurbished the gym space with innovative equipment and a digitally powered member journey. Delivered in collaboration with Technogym, the new gym is a market-leading facility that increases physical activity provision for students, staff, and local residents and supports academic outcomes. Rob Carr, Head of Commercial Operations, explains why the new space is hit with students.
University of West London Students' Union (UWLSU) sports centre gym has occupied a purpose-built building since 2019. Operated by UWLSU under contract to the University of West London, its mission is to support student wellbeing by increasing participation in physical activity, as well as offering a viable external membership link that operates throughout the year.
"Technogym’s design and concept support at tender and before installation were second to none,” said Rob. “They were able to craft and explain the most suitable layout, and helped us redefine our member journey.”

UWLSU gym powered by Technogym
The refurbishment saw the fitness suite almost double in size to 175 sq. m. with walls removed to create one large inclusive fitness suite with more space for strength equipment.
Rob and his team were invited to the Technogym UK Experience Centre to see how the equipment and digital ecosystem work together and design layout with the Technogym Interior Design team that went on to become the final version of the gym. Building on the strength of the partnership, UWLSU decided on a strategic rebrand, launching the gym as “powered by Technogym.”
"We were confident that people know Technogym as top quality, innovative, and cutting-edge,” said Rob. “Leveraging Technogym helps us tell students and members that we are a market-leading facility.”

Multifunctional equipment to maximise choice
A key focus of the refurbishment was to shift the equipment balance towards strength training, aligning with wider consumer fitness trends. Technogym Selection smart equipment brought a fresh look and feel to the upgraded gym, with the consoles allowing members to personalise their training and track their progress.
The addition of the Technogym Universe Tower represents an all-new type of training equipment for the UWLSU gym. The multifunctional rig is proving popular for functional workouts, small group training, for circuits, and in PT-led classes.
Technogym’s advice and product range helped UWLSU increase variety without impacting layout, adding standout favourites like the Pure Strength Hip Thrust as a direct response to member feedback. The cardio zone was refreshed with innovative, content-rich equipment from Technogym Skill Line, including the performance-focused Skillrun and Skillup, offers multifunctional modes for mixed use.

The facility has brought in several digital touchpoints for the first time, including Technogym Visio screens in the stretch area and in classes, giving members and instructors a useful tool for self-led exercise and group sessions.
Technogym Checkup, the AI-powered assessment tool, is now a key part of the member journey, capturing member data to deliver a personal “wellness age” and bespoke training plans. The gym now uses Technogym Mywellness CRM, creating a cohesive digital ecosystem for members and staff.
Members are onboarded via the Technogym App, which enables class bookings, messages, and equipment availability from a customised homepage. Technogym Checkup is an early part of the member journey, with the results stored on the app. Technogym Coach uses Technogym Checkup data to generate training plans, which members can activate by scanning QR codes on any piece of Technogym equipment.
UWLSU benefit from the full Technogym Care package, with all service requests handled quickly through an online portal, giving a level of responsiveness that the team never have to chase.

Technogym digital innovations help UWLSU operations, too, with asset usage data making it easy to analyse equipment use as well Mywellness CRM reporting tools help staff respond proactively with offers, programmes, or targeted outreach for specific student groups. As the University prepares to launch Sports Science and Sports Psychology courses in 2026, the data will help identify the best times for academic students to use the purpose-built space.
